Thriving Greens and Safe Scenes for Tots and Tails: Choosing Child and Pet Safe Houseplants

CHILD AND PET FRIENDLY PLANTS

Nestled in the heart of the vibrant community of Highland, Indiana, (inside America's Antique Mall - Booth V5) is Earth Omi Sol, our small but mighty plant shop! It's a place where leafy greens and blossoms mingle with laughter and tales. Humble with his botanical wisdom, and Ninah, with her horticultural flair, don't just sell plants; they weave inspiring stories and share wisdom. As a sanctuary for plant enthusiasts, families, and pet owners, we understand the art of balancing a love for plants with the need for safety. Read on to learn how to enjoy your greens while keeping your little ones, whether on two legs or four paws, safe and sound.
Choosing the Right Plant Companions

First things first: choosing plants that are safe for both children and pets is crucial. Our plant journey begins with the selection. We love to start conversations with "What's your family like?" or "Tell us about your pets!" because safety comes first! Spider Plants (Chlorophytum comosum) are always a hit, non-toxic, and praised by NASA's Clean Air Study for their air-purifying qualities. They're also a favorite among our feline friends who love to gaze at their dangling spiderettes! We often recommend big, bushy Boston Ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata) for their lush look and pet-friendly nature, a fact well-documented by the ASPCA.

For those with a flair for the dramatic, the Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura) - safe and stunning - folds its leaves at night, much to the amusement of children. And let's not forget the resilient Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), recommended by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals as both pet-friendly and a natural humidifier.
Strategic Placement for Peace of Mind
"What good is a plant if it's in the wrong place?" - Your Cat
Let's talk strategy - plant placement is a game of cat-and-mouse (sometimes literally)! Tall shelves or hanging planters are fantastic for keeping your green friends away from curious critters and kiddos. We've seen some creative uses of wall-mounted shelves – it's like a living art display, but with a “Do Not Touch” sign. Consider hanging planters for trailing plants like the String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii), creating a cascading green waterfall that's safely out of the tail-swipe zone.

In Case of a Green Emergency

Despite our best efforts, sometimes little Sherlock Holmeses and adventurous Paws find their way to the forbidden greenery. Even with all the precautions, accidents happen. Should your pet or child sample a plant they shouldn't, it's important to have resources at hand. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) and the American Association of Poison Control Centers are invaluable contacts. Keep these numbers in a visible spot: ASPCA APCC (888-426-4435) and Poison Control (800-222-1222). If for any reason you suspect a child or fur-baby has ingested plant material, do not hesitate to call these numbers! It is better to err on the side of safety.
Educating the Young Plant Lovers

When your children are old enough, introducing them to the world of plants is not just educational, but also immensely fulfilling. At Earth Omi Sol, we believe in fostering a healthy connection between children and nature. Teaching them plant vocabulary and showing them how to observe the subtle changes in growth each season, nurtures a deep appreciation and understanding of nature. We're committed to creating a future where our children recognize the importance of nurturing Mother Earth's plants – they not only heal us but also teach us valuable lessons in self-care and responsibility.
